A vegetable crop can be one of the best ways of ensuring that fresh organic produce gets to the dinner table. Yet it is essential for the starting gardener to take note of two important considerations involved in raising a crop of vegetables: lots of sunlight and rich fertile soil.
A vegetable crop requires a good amount of sunlight to flourish; therefore, an open spot that receives a bright and strong sunlight would be a necessity. This is due to the fact that sunlight is an indispensable component in photosynthesis, a process that supplies a plant with the energy that lets it grow. An enormous amount of sunlight translates into a good amount of growth, producing a large crop.
The second requirement would be the provision of good fertile soil, which provides a plant with plenty of nutrients that promote growth. Without this, plant growth is often stunted, and sickly yellow leaves become extremely evident. Infertility in soil can be easily overcome through the application of fertilizer, one effective favourite being seaweed, in the form of prepared solid bits or, for more immediate enrichment, liquid extract, sold in most stores.
Aside from these, caring for vegetables is like caring for any other plant – plus the harvesting and constant replanting. With this in mind, avoid making vegetables the focus of your garden design, despite many of them possessing aesthetic qualities pleasant on the eyes. After all, you will barely find green, leafy and delicious looking vegetables hanging our in gardens for too long!
